How WIAA qualifying works
- Regionals — top 4 finishers in each event from each regional advance to sectionals.
- Sectionals — top 3 (D1) or top 4 (D2/D3) in each event advance to state, plus relay teams whose sectional performance ranks among the next-best 8 statewide.
- State qualifying marks — published by WIAA the day after sectionals, retroactively listing the cutoffs the eight statewide "extra qualifiers" hit. Those become the following season's reference targets.
