Stratford's Zander Zawislan sets a Division 3 400-meter meet record
LA CROSSE — Zander Zawislan saved his best quarter-mile for the biggest race of his season.
Zander Zawislan of Stratford won the Division 3 boys' 400 meters in 47.40 at the WIAA State Championships — a meet record — with Brady Thompson second in 48.14. A sub-48 quarter is a special run anywhere; doing it to break a state-meet record put it among the marks of the weekend.
It capped a season-long climb. Zawislan opened the year around 52 seconds and worked down through the 49s and 48s — 48.56, then 48.77 — before dropping more than a second to 47.40 in the final, exactly when it mattered.
And the 400 is only part of his range. Zawislan is a full-spectrum sprinter, pairing the record quarter with a 21.74 in the 200 and a wind-aided 10.80 in the 100. A runner that fast from 100 to 400 is rare at any level; in Division 3 this spring he was the best of them, and leaves La Crosse the 400 champion with the meet record to his name.
