Waukesha West's 4x200 sets a meet record — and gives Cole Zielinski a third title
LA CROSSE — Cole Zielinski's biggest weekend got one piece bigger.
Nolan Schmidbauer, Ammonra Lomas, Josh Ziebell and Cole Zielinski ran 1:25.65 to win the Division 1 boys' 4x200 relay at the WIAA State Championships — a meet record — holding off Germantown (1:26.83).
For Zielinski it was a third state title in a single meet. He had already swept both horizontal jumps — winning the long jump with a 25-9¾ personal best and the triple jump at 48-2 — and then helped Waukesha West's sprint relay into the record book. Three events, three titles, one weekend.
A 4x200 record is a team achievement above all: four runners trusting three exchanges at full speed. Schmidbauer, Lomas, Ziebell and Zielinski timed theirs perfectly. Waukesha West leaves La Crosse with the Division 1 4x200 meet record — and a multi-event champion in Zielinski who simply couldn't stop winning.
