Arrowhead's Elise Schroeder clears a meet record in the D1 pole vault
LA CROSSE — The bar kept going up, and Elise Schroeder kept clearing it — all the way to a meet record.
Elise Schroeder of Arrowhead won the Division 1 girls' pole vault at 13 feet, 6 inches at the WIAA State Championships, setting a meet record. Ashwaubenon's Lera Black was second at 13-3.
Thirteen-six is rarefied air in the high school vault, and Schroeder had been building toward it all year — clearing 13-0 again and again through the spring and topping out at 13-6. At state she matched that best when it counted most, and on the sport's biggest stage the height was a meet record.
She was one piece of a huge weekend for Arrowhead. Teammate Payton Eicher won the Division 1 girls' long jump, and Trey Resch took the Division 1 boys' 100 — a sprint-and-jumps haul few programs in the state could match. Arrowhead's Schroeder is the Division 1 pole vault state champion, with the record to show for it.
