Waukesha West's Cole Zielinski completes a jumps double — with a 25-9¾ long jump
LA CROSSE — Cole Zielinski already had one state title this weekend. He went and got the other one — with the longest jump of his life.
Cole Zielinski of Waukesha West won the Division 1 boys' long jump at 25 feet, 9¾ inches at the WIAA State Championships, completing a sweep of both horizontal jumps after also winning the triple jump. Zachariah Zillman was a distant second at 22-9½ — Zielinski won by roughly three feet.
The 25-9¾ was a leap into new territory. Zielinski had been one of the state's best at around 24 feet all spring, with a season best of 24-4¼ at the Myrhum Invite; at state he found nearly a foot and a half more, clearing 25-9¾ when it counted. It's also a step up from the 24-5 that won him this same title a year ago.
Two horizontal-jump titles in one weekend — the long jump at 25-9¾, the triple jump at 48-2 — make for one of the most complete jumps performances of the meet. Waukesha West's Zielinski leaves La Crosse a double state champion.
