Marathon's Chris Marcell repeats as state discus champion — and out-throws every division
LA CROSSE — In a small-school field, Chris Marcell threw a big-school distance — and then some. No one in any division beat it.
Chris Marcell of Marathon won the Division 3 boys' discus on Friday at 198 feet, 8 inches, defending the state title he won a year ago. Fennimore's Madden Crubel was next at 189-2, nearly ten feet behind. Marcell's throw was the longest discus of the entire meet — farther than the Division 1 (172-5) and Division 2 (165-5) champions managed.
For Marcell, 198-8 was almost a quiet day. He has been one of the most consistent throwers in the state all spring, well past the 200-foot line: a season-best 212-0 at the DC Everest Boys Invitational on May 1, plus 210-10, 210-2 and 208-3 along the way. His winning state throw came in under that range and still cleared the field by a comfortable margin.
It's a title defense, too. Marcell won the 2025 Division 3 discus at 211-4, and he came back to take it again. Two straight state discus crowns for Marathon — and in 2026, the longest discus throw in Wisconsin's state meet, regardless of division.
