Neenah's Emma Severson wins the state shot put by nearly four feet
LA CROSSE — The Division 1 girls' shot put was decided long before the final throw. Emma Severson made sure of that.
Emma Severson of Neenah won the title on Friday with a throw of 47-11½ at the WIAA State Championships — nearly four feet clear of the rest of the field. Baraboo's Lily Rogers was next at 44-0¾, with no one else past 41 feet.
Severson has been the class of the event all spring. She opened the season throwing in the 46-to-47-foot range, reached a season-best 49-11 at the Neenah Rocket Invite on May 1, and threw 49-5 to win her regional. Her 47-11½ at state was simply more than anyone else could answer.
A year ago she was fourth here. At the 2025 state meet Severson placed fourth in the shot put at 40-2; this season she added nearly eight feet to that mark and won going away.
She is a two-event thrower, too: Severson has been past 150 feet in the discus this spring, with a season best of 155-8. But Friday belonged to the shot, where Neenah's champion left no doubt.
