Oshkosh West's Sydnee Nelson breaks 14 seconds to win the D1 100 hurdles
LA CROSSE — Sydnee Nelson had spent the season knocking on the door of 14 seconds. In the state final, she broke it down.
Sydnee Nelson of Oshkosh West won the Division 1 girls' 100-meter hurdles in 13.94 at the WIAA State Championships — the first sub-14 race of her career. Jamyana Witte took second in 14.43.
Nelson had been climbing toward it all spring: 14.14 at the Myrhum Invite in early May, 14.36 in her state preliminary, and then 13.94 when the title was on the line. Saving a personal best for the final is the hardest trick in the sport, and Nelson pulled it off.
Oshkosh West has its Division 1 100-hurdle champion — and Nelson has the sub-14 clocking she had been chasing.
